Good book? I have recently stumbled across a old book that I used years ago that helped to to learn and study different chess openings and I wondered if there were any higher rated players that could tell me if this is indeed a good tool..the book is "Modern Chess Openings 12th edition" by Walter Korn Thank you for your input in advance Best regards, Mark Korn on the cob Absolutely hated it !! The move trees were very cumbersome and I did not… More: backgammon online

Gambits and Sacrifices I recently have been messing around with a new opening--e5, d5, then d4. This I believe is called the queen's gambit but I could be wrong. I don't know much about gambits--I haven't had time to read many books--but I would be interested in learning more about them. I don't know the whole sequence and if the gambit is accepted, I generally protect my pawn with a knight. Is this a good follow up? What are some of the opening… More: online chess

The opening that baffles and eludes you... Is anyone like me ... that you have a certain opening that just seems to keep itself beyond your grasp? Speaking of your ability (or rather, lack of...) to play it well. Or just understand it properly. And perhaps seems like it becomes all the more elusive aor baffling the more you play it ?! Maybe it puts you on edge, grinding your teeth at times? Any opening you just hate to participate in? Or that you… More: backgammon online

1300's that play like Gm's To all you low rated points hunters , Yes we can tell when you use Chess computers , we get the idea you like to win , but perhaps youll get more satisfaction from actually learning to play chess instead of learning how to use a mouse . I allways get a kick out of the excuses these Little bundles of brains dish out when they try to explain how they play like a GM , yet are rated like 1300 with over 100 games played ,… More: chess history

Morphy and Fischer Has anyone noticed the similarities between the lives and careers of Morphy and Fischer? They both reached the top of the chess world, then abruptly decided that chess was useless and descended into paranoia. Both represented the New World vs the Old. Their games are also similar in that both are tactical and direct in their playing style. Morphy became insane at the end of his life. I suspect, sadly, that the same will happen play chess online…

An Interesting Offer ... Scanning these very Forums, an interesting offer appears -> gameknot.com *** Coyotefan offers Chess lessons for $25.00 an hour; Let's discuss it ... ! !? IMO The price, unfortunately does not seem out of line with some I've seen. Around here that's close to top-end pricing. BUT this IS the Midwest, a great blackhole of Chess at many times. BUT, you DO get an FM for the money. Then again, rating does not always play chess online…

Repetoire recommendation for beginner? One of a million similar questions I'm sure. :) I've returned to chess fairly recently after a long hiatus, before which I only ever really messed around with chess and never had an idea of which opening I was playing. Now I'm looking to build my repetoire as White (I'm content with my Black repetoire) for now, and I have no idea where to settle. 1.e4 seems to lead to some exciting games, but the Sicilian play chess online…

Chessmaster 9000 vs. Fritz 7 Which program is stronger? Apparently, people are saying that Fritz 7 is stronger, but Chessmaster 9000 advertises a base rating of 2722, and for some reason the rating fluxuates to over 2800 at times. I'm not sure why the rating fluxuates. But anyway, I own a Chessmaster 9000, and was just wondering how good it is. Also, for anybody that owns the program, did you encounter problems with the performance of CM 9000 play chess online…

pawn promotion OTB what happens when there aren't queens available and someone wants to promote to a queen in an OTB match? are they allowed to just put a rook on upsidedown.. or just keep track that that particular pawn is a queen? or grab a spare queen from the match going on next to you.. or an arbiter will have a spare? Hehehe This will depend on the match preparation. Each of your solution is possible (I have seen it happened) except for the play chess online…

Strongest real life opponents? Who is the strongest player you've ever played OTB? The strongest player I've played in a rated game was a 2069-rated player from Nebraska that I played at a tournament in Omaha. The strongest player I've played in a casual game is IM Michael Brooks. This doesn't count a couple of IMs that I've played on ICC. GM Simen Agdestein I got lucky and met GM Simen Agdestein in round 1 in a blitz tournament a year ago. If play chess online…

Alekhine's Last Meal! The death of world champion Alexander Alekhine at age 53 refuses to die. Although it didn't look suspicious, rumors are still circulating that he either killed himself or was murdered. The AP reported that he choked to death on a piece of meat on March 24, 1946, in Estoril, Portugal: "Intimates said Alekhine was accustomed to eating with his friends, never using knives or forks when he could avoid them, and that he would play chess online…
